This photo is magic! The brother is solemn while the revolution rages in the background, but they’re still intertwined.

The composition is interesting because the man is in the center and the horizontal and vertical lines frame him, but don’t box him in.  His formal attire contradicts his contracted pose, body pulled in, at rest but not peaceful. His strong fingers are woven together in contemplation—is it prayer or frustration of just deep though?Look at his feet, there’s trompe l’oeil effect here: his booted feet seem to be floating on the pale gray riser, and his body seems as if it is photoshopped into the picture.  It’s as if to say this man dressed as he is could be inserted into many scenarios, a park bench, an office meeting, a classroom, but here is on an urban front stoop.
Most of all I love the contrast of his small masculine face with pursed lips which faces left with Angela’s poster.  She is facing to the right, her large feminine face silently shouting.  The door chain symbolizes the Jim Crow laws that kept out “colored” people and the shackles of slave ancestors.  See how Angela is protesting, turning her back to those chains?

Haha, I just thought it’d be awesome to take a photo with Angela Davis.

“I got the world in my hands/the master plan…”

I’d say he looks contemplative, perhaps slightly melancholy. But Iwon’t try to read too much into the picture, either way it’s brilliant.

Day by Day - An Ode to Consistency
“Those who achieve fulfillment are the ones who are totally committed to their pursuit. The circumstances & surroundings may change but, no matter what, they’ll be there doing it day by day.”

For an artist, everything is inspiration. Life is a motivator to create. In this case, the muse was location, location, location. C8’s resident photographer has a great eye for location scouting so we quickly scrambled to utilize this New York gem. In combination with the incomprehensible creative mind of our artistic director, Arialle K, magic was made. They are able to see and capture the spirit of place and person. This dilapidated diner reeks with character that we see obscure beauty. Superior visionaries…that is who we are, and that is why we are the Culture of Creativity.
